Storm record · Dare County
Dare County is not a hail county
What the public record says about roofs in Buxton and the rest of Dare County
That is worth stating plainly, because it is what the record says. Across 2016 to 2026 NOAA logged 2 hail events in Dare County, out of 68 roof-relevant storm events in total. The largest hail anywhere in the county file is Quarter - Half Dollar at 1.00 in, on May 15, 2025.
So if a roof here is being written up for hail damage, the county record does not support hail as the likely cause, and it is fair to ask what the assessment is actually based on. What the record does show is wind: 64 thunderstorm-wind events, peaking at 82 kt on Mar 5, 2025, and 2 tornadoes. An inspection worth paying for in this county is looking at lifted and missing tabs along the eaves and rake edges, ridge caps knocked out of line, and flashing pulled loose at walls and penetrations — not at bruise marks in the field of the roof.
The $260,000 figure is NOAA's reported property damage for the whole of Dare County from these storms, 2016–2026 — a county-wide reporting total. It is not the cost of a roof, and it is not an amount paid to any property owner.
Individual events in the Dare County file

- Mar 5, 2025 -- Thunderstorm Wind (82 kt gust)
- Sep 3, 2016 -- Tornado (EF0) -- $250K property damage reported

* 2026 is a partial year — the record runs to the most recent update of the source, not to the end of the year, so its bar is not comparable with the others. A year showing zero had no recorded hail, tornado or thunderstorm-wind event in this county.

The communities nearest Buxton reach into 1 other county, and those counties do not share Dare County's record:
- Ocracoke (Hyde County) — 30 recorded events; largest hail Baseball at 2.00 in, Apr 28, 2016; most recent entry Jan 9, 2024 (Thunderstorm Wind)
Source: NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database, 2016-2026, Dare County (U.S. Government work, public domain). Counts cover roof-relevant event types only — hail, tornado and thunderstorm wind. Records are county-level; NOAA does not log these events by street address.
FORTIFIED on the coast · Dare County
64 of Dare County's 68 recorded events are wind
Dare County is in North Carolina’s CAMA coastal area — why the standard keeps coming up on roofs in Buxton
Between 2016 and 2026 NOAA logged 64 thunderstorm-wind events in Dare County out of 68 roof-relevant events in total, against 2 hail events and 2 tornadoes. The strongest gust in the file is 82 kt, measured on Mar 5, 2025.
Every requirement at the FORTIFIED Roof level answers wind rather than hail: the deck sealed as a water barrier in its own right, so losing the covering does not mean losing the ceilings; ring-shank fasteners in an enhanced nailing pattern, so repeated uplift cannot draw the sheathing off the rafters; a wider drip edge and a fully adhered starter, because a roof unzips from whichever edge the wind gets under first; a covering carrying the required wind rating; and attic vents tested against wind-driven rain rather than the rain that falls straight down.
FORTIFIED is a voluntary resilience construction standard published by IBHS — a way of building a roof and documenting how it was built, not a warranty, a claims service, or a promise about any storm. Carolina Trophy Roofs is a FORTIFIED certified roofer: we build to the standard and photograph the concealed work. The evaluator has to be a separate party from the installing roofer, and IBHS issues the designation after reviewing what that evaluator submits.
