    Roofing services in Washington

    Roof repair

Leaks, lifted and missing shingles, and flashing that has let go around chimneys, skylights and walls. An active leak gets a tarp first, then a repair once the roof is safe to walk.

    Roof replacement

Tear-off, synthetic underlayment and new architectural shingles, as on the Washington job above, with skylights and dormers flashed into the new roof rather than patched around.

    Storm damage on the Pamlico

Wind off the water lifts shingles along the eaves and rakes first. A free storm inspection walks every slope and photographs what it finds, so you know where you stand before you file.

Between 2016 and 2026 NOAA logged 91 roof-relevant storm events in Beaufort County: 66 thunderstorm wind, 19 hail and 6 tornadoes. The strongest straight-line gust on file is 61 kt, on Jun 3, 2022.

Tornado damage is different in kind from everything else in this record. It is narrow — a track a few hundred yards wide can take the roofs off one street and leave the next street untouched — and inside the track the failure is structural rather than cosmetic: decking lifted off the rafters, whole roof planes removed, debris driven through what is left. For the far larger number of homes that sit outside the track, the damage is the same physics as any severe-wind event: pressure at the edges lifting tabs along the eaves and rakes, ridge caps displaced, and impact marks from debris carried out of the track. Both are worth looking at after a tornado-producing system crosses the county, and the dated entries below say when those systems came through.

FORTIFIED on the coast · Beaufort County

Coastal Beaufort County, and a standard written for wind

Beaufort County is in North Carolina’s CAMA coastal area — why the standard keeps coming up on roofs in Washington

Wind is 66 of the 91 roof-relevant events NOAA logged in Beaufort County between 2016 and 2026, against 19 hail events and 6 tornadoes. The strongest gust in the file is 61 kt, measured on Jun 3, 2022.

At the FORTIFIED Roof level the standard is five requirements: a sealed roof deck, ring-shank deck attachment in an enhanced nailing pattern, a wider drip edge with a fully adhered starter, a covering carrying the required wind rating, and attic vents tested against wind-driven rain. All five are settled while the roof is stripped and invisible the day after, which is why the standard turns on photographs of concealed work rather than on how a finished roof looks from the driveway.

FORTIFIED is a voluntary resilience construction standard published by IBHS — a way of building a roof and documenting how it was built, not a warranty, a claims service, or a promise about any storm. Carolina Trophy Roofs is a FORTIFIED certified roofer: we build to the standard and photograph the concealed work. The evaluator has to be a separate party from the installing roofer, and IBHS issues the designation after reviewing what that evaluator submits.

    Storm damage · Washington, NC

    Storm damage in Washington

Washington sits where the Tar River widens into the Pamlico, and Beaufort County's file shows what that open water brings: mostly thunderstorm wind, six tornado reports, and hail that, when it falls here, has been an inch or larger every time. Waterfront roofs take the wind first, along the eaves and rakes that face the river.

The public record backs that up. Between 2016 and 2026, the NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database logged 91 roof-relevant storm events in Beaufort County: 19 hail, 66 thunderstorm-wind and 6 tornado reports. The largest hail in the file measured 1.75 in. (Golf Ball) on May 13, 2019. The strongest measured gust was 61 knots on Jun 3, 2022, in the unit the source records. One entry in the county file reads: “Jun 3, 2022 -- Thunderstorm Wind (61 kt gust)”.

    Insurance claims in Washington

Beaufort County is inside the coastal area, so the first question on a Washington roof claim is which policy and which deductible apply: homeowners, a separate windstorm policy, or a named-storm deductible. The North Carolina Department of Insurance says every homeowners policy in the state requires you to give prompt notice of a loss, make reasonable emergency repairs and keep the receipts, and that the insurer should acknowledge receipt of your claim within 30 days. Carolina Trophy Roofs documents the damage, meets the adjuster on your roof in Washington, and handles the claim paperwork from the first photo to the final invoice. Read the step-by-step North Carolina roof insurance claims guide for deductibles, depreciation, deadlines and what to do if a claim is denied.

Questions from Washington and Beaufort County

Do you have an office in Washington?
No. Washington is served from our Greenville office at 1414 Forbes St, about 18 miles away in a straight line, and from our main office in Rocky Mount.
Do you work in Chocowinity, Bath and Belhaven?
Yes. Two of the roofs on this page are in Chocowinity and Belhaven, and the Beaufort County towns listed further down are part of the same service area.
Which deductible applies to a Beaufort County roof claim?
Start with the declarations page. Some North Carolina policies carry a percentage deductible for wind, hail or named storms, and homes near the coast often have a separate windstorm policy. The NC Department of Insurance explains that a named-storm deductible applies from the first National Weather Service advisory, watch or warning for a named storm anywhere in the state until 24 hours after the last one ends.
Can you work around my skylights?
Yes. On a re-roof each skylight is flashed into the new shingles, as on the September 2025 Washington job above. Whether a skylight itself should be replaced is part of the inspection.
    What is a FORTIFIED roof?
A roof built to the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof standard for high wind, which includes a sealed roof deck under the shingles. Carolina Trophy Roofs is a FORTIFIED Certified Roofer; our FORTIFIED roofing page covers what it involves.
    Do you offer financing?
Yes, on our financing partner's application portal with dealer number 391677. The lender makes the approval decision.
