    What a FORTIFIED roof requires

    A whole roof system

A FORTIFIED Roof™ is built to a construction standard from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). It is designed to keep wind and rain out during severe weather, and to keep the roof deck attached to your home. It's a whole system, not just a better shingle.

    The rule

    Two certified professionals

    Certified FORTIFIED roofer

Installs every layer to the FORTIFIED standard and photographs each step. That's us: Carolina Trophy Roofs is a FORTIFIED certified contractor.

    Certified FORTIFIED evaluator

An independent evaluator verifies the work and the documentation and submits it to IBHS. No evaluator sign-off, no designation.

A FORTIFIED job needs two certified professionals: a certified FORTIFIED roofing contractor to install it, and a certified FORTIFIED evaluator to verify and document it. The evaluator is independent of the roofer and submits the documentation to IBHS. Without both, there is no FORTIFIED designation.

    What goes into the roof

    Better attachment

8d ring-shank nails in an enhanced, tighter nailing pattern hold the roof deck to the framing. IBHS testing shows ring-shank nails nearly double the roof's strength against wind. The evaluator checklist we work from calls for nails every 4 inches, checked against a chalk line.

Sealed roof deck detail, CTR FORTIFIED Roof installSealed roof deck detail, CTR FORTIFIED Roof install

    Sealed roof deck

Every seam in the roof deck is sealed (taped seams, or a fully adhered membrane) so that if the shingles are torn off, water can't pour through the gaps. IBHS says sealing the deck can cut water intrusion by up to 95%.

Locked-down edges detail, CTR FORTIFIED Roof installLocked-down edges detail, CTR FORTIFIED Roof install

    Locked-down edges

A wider drip edge goes on top of the underlayment and is nailed in a W pattern, with a fully adhered starter strip at the eaves and rakes, so wind can't get under the roof edge.

Underlayment fastening detail, CTR FORTIFIED Roof installUnderlayment fastening detail, CTR FORTIFIED Roof install

    Underlayment fastening

Underlayment is fastened on a measured pattern. Our evaluator's checklist calls for cap nails 6″ on center at seams and 12″ in the field, photographed with a tape measure.

Tested roof cover & vents detail, CTR FORTIFIED Roof installTested roof cover & vents detail, CTR FORTIFIED Roof install

    Tested roof cover & vents

Shingles must carry the top wind ratings (ASTM D3161 Class F or ASTM D7158 Class H). IKO Dynasty carries both. Attic vents must be wind- and rain-resistant, and gable vents get storm covers where needed.

    Step by step

    How a FORTIFIED job works

    1. Choose FORTIFIEDPick the Fortified package. Your rep writes the system and shingle on your options sheet.
    2. Assemble the teamCTR, a FORTIFIED certified contractor, coordinates with an independent certified FORTIFIED evaluator.
    3. Document the starting pointBefore shingles go on, the deck thickness (7/16″ minimum), rafter spacing and attic nailing are photographed.
    4. Build it to the standardRing-shank deck nailing, sealed deck, underlayment, drip edge, starter and vents are installed to the FORTIFIED standard.
    5. Photograph every layerEach stage is photographed as it happens, with tape measures, chalk lines and product labels showing, so it can be verified.
    6. Finish & final photosRooftop overview photos, plus four ground-level elevation photos of the finished, clean job site.
    7. IBHS reviewThe evaluator submits the documentation to IBHS. A team at IBHS reviews it against the standard.
    8. Certificate deliveredWhen it passes, IBHS issues a FORTIFIED designation certificate to the evaluator, who delivers it to you.

    Your FORTIFIED certificate

When the documentation passes IBHS review, IBHS issues a FORTIFIED Roof designation certificate for your home to the evaluator, who delivers it to you. Per IBHS, designations are issued for five years.

    Plan for the paperwork

Photos are taken at every stage, so the crew pauses to document as they go. IBHS review happens after the roof is finished, so the certificate follows the install.
